Save the Victorian Disability Sector

This campaign is focused on protecting the future of 580 group homes in Victoria’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) services, which are at risk of closure due to a funding shortfall. Without urgent action, the expiry of a key State government subsidy in December 2025 will lead to major wage cuts for over 7,500 disability support workers, and nearly 5,000 participants could lose the care and stability they rely on every day. We are calling on both the Federal and State Governments to intervene, ensuring sustainable funding, fair wages for workers, and the preservation of quality care standards that have been built over decades.

If action isn’t taken, these group homes—critical to the independence and well-being of thousands of Victorians—could be forced to close, displacing participants and undermining the dignity of workers who support them. This campaign is about more than just policy; it’s about standing up for the people who call these group homes home, and for the workers who provide them with essential care. We need a long-term solution to safeguard this vital part of the disability sector.

Email Tips +

Thank you so much for writing an email to your local MPs demanding action to save Victoria's Group Homes.

Tips for emails:

1. Introduction
Start by saying your name and who you are. (My name is John and I'm a disability support worker, My name is John and my family member is in SIL, my name is John and I'm a concerned constituent etc)

2. Be Direct and Clear
Start by stating the problem: the 580 group homes in Supported Independent Living (SIL) could close if the State government subsidy ends on the 31st December 2025, which will hurt participants, families and workers.

2. Explain Why It’s Urgent
Tell them that the State funding subsidy runs out in December 2025, and without action from the State and Federal government, over 7,500 workers will lose wages, and nearly 5,000 participantscould lose their homes and will lose key safety conditions such as 1 house supervisor per group home, mandatory training of workers, staffing ratios etc.

3. Make your Demand
The Victorian State government cannot halt the subsidy on the 31st of December until key reforms are achieved in NDIS funding.
